The coastal city of New London is located in New London County in Connecticut. The city has a population of about 26,000 people and a median household income of $33,810. Located on Long Island Sound, at the mouth of the Thames River, the city is one main port of entry on the Northeast coast of the United States.
New London is home to several note worthy educational institiutions such as Connecticut College, Mitchell College, The Williams School, and The United States Coast Guard Academy. Connecticut and Mitchell Colleges are coed, private, liberal arts colleges. Connecticut College is known for its crew and sailing teams. Mitchell College promotes a safe envirnoment and has declared itself an alcohol free campus. The United States Coast Guard Academy is often called one of the most difficult institutions to gain entry into and provides education and training for future officers of the U.S. Coast Guard.
The city of New London is also the home base of the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter, “Chinook”as well as the the Coast Guard tall ship “Eagle”. The “Chinook” is a 87-foot coastal patrol boat. The tall ship “Eagle” is a 295-foot barque that is used as a training cutter for officers being trained for the U.S. Coast Guard. This ship is the only commissioned sailing ship currently in service.
